According to the NY Times, scientists have determined that willpower isn’t an intangible skill; it’s a real form of energy in your brain that’s fueled by glucose. From a dietary point of view, this explains a lot. If you’ve ever dieted, perhaps cutting carbohydrates to cut calories, you may have found yourself easily defeated. Since glucose is formed when we eat carbohydrates, cutting them back means less glucose, which means less willpower.

This does not mean you can eat all the carbs you want. It does mean that armed with this knowledge, you can set yourself up for success.

By going on the offense and preparing for challenges, you’re much more likely to stick to resolutions like ‘lose weight’. It’s just like I tell my clients: Plan and Prepare. Know your upcoming challenges, like an special event or vacation. Recognize daily challenges like a busy schedule or unsupportive family. Identify what specific steps you can take to get around these challenges, and you’re in great shape.

Enlist help and you’ll go even farther. Ask a friend to support you. Schedule a session with a nutritionist (I know a good one!). Check out sites like stickK where you can create commitment contracts. Post your goals and progress to Facebook to help keep you accountable.

Read the full NY Times article for more good ideas and an inspiring example (albeit out-of-reach for most of us).

For one-on-one nutritional counseling you can take advantage of no matter where you are, check out Healthy On The Go. In six short weeks, you can be a healthier (and smaller) person.
